چکیده

Laser ablation is used in a growing number of applications in various areas including medicine, archaeology, chemistry, environmental and materials sciences. In this work the heat transfer and phase change phenomena during nanosecond laser ablation of a copper (Cu) target in a helium (He) background gas at atmospheric pressure are presented. An enthalpy model is outlined, which accounts for heating, melting, and vaporization of the target. As far as we know, this is the first model that connects the thermodynamics and underlying kinetics of this challenging phase change problem in a self-

Excimer laser ablation of thin gold films on a quartz crystal microbalance at various argon background pressures

Excimer laser ablation of gold films deposited on a quartz crystal microbalance is investigated. The ablation rate is directly obtained from the frequency shift of the microbalance. The measured single-shot ablation rate is found to be at least two orders of magnitude higher than the numerical predictions based on a surface vaporization model. Surface morphologystudies indicate that hydrodynami...

Modeling DT Vaporization and Melting in a Direct-Drive Target

During injection, inertial fusion energy (IFE) direct drive targets are subjected to heating from energy exchange with the background gas and radiation from the reactor wall. This thermal loading could cause phase change (vaporization and/or melting) of the deuteriumtritium (DT). In the past, it was assumed that any phase change would result in a violation of the stringent smoothness and symmet...

Modified Enthalpy Method Applied to Laser Annealing of Semi Conductor Films

The rapid melting of silicon film due to the absorption of a CW laser beam radiation is studied. The silicon film melting and recrystallization is mainly controlled by the temperature distribution in the semiconductor. The enthalpy technique for the solution of phase change problems is used in an explicit finite difference form to calculate the transient temperature distribution in the silicon ...

An efficient reliable method to estimate the vaporization enthalpy of pure substances according to the normal boiling temperature and critical properties

The heat of vaporization of a pure substance at its normal boiling temperature is a very important property in many chemical processes. In this work, a new empirical method was developed to predict vaporization enthalpy of pure substances. This equation is a function of normal boiling temperature, critical temperature, and critical pressure. The presented model is simple to use and provides an ...

Vapor pressure determination by thermogravimetry

A method for measuring the vapor pressures of a wide range of materials using a conventional thermobalance and standard sample holders is described. The equipment is calibrated using pure reference materials of known vapor pressure and exploiting the relationship between volatilization rate and vapor pressure based on the Langmuir equation for free evaporation. Enthalpies of vaporization and su...
